Session 1: What is Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL)?

This webinar took place on Wednesday, August 30 and provided an overview of TaRL and discussed the pros and cons of different implementation and design decisions. Rukmini Banerji (CEO, Pratham), Annie Duflo (Executive Director, IPA), and John Floretta(Director of Policy, J-PAL) presented and answered audience questions.

Session 2: Assessment

On Friday, October 27, Wilima Wadhwa (Director, ASER Centre), Hannah-May Wilson (Program Manager, PAL Network), and Rachel Glennerster (Executive Director, J-PAL) presented on Assessment.

Wilima Wadhwa discussed the ASER Tool as a spark for action and the role of assessment in highlighting the lack of basic skills, Hannah-May Wilson shared insights from contextualizing the ASER tool across Africa, and Rachel Glennerster presented on how assessment results can inform what teachers do in the classroom.

Session 3: Monitoring and Mentoring

The third webinar on Monitoring and Mentoring took place on Thursday, December 7, at 8:00 AM EST. Devyani Pershad (Head of Program Management, Pratham) discussed the role of monitors and mentors in TaRL programs. Benjamin Piper (Senior Director, RTI International) shared research on teacher coaching and innovative ways of collecting data. Hanno Kemp (Program Director, FUEL) talked about how to ensure monitoring data is used to strengthen systems and inform action.

Session 4: Teacher Training

On March 6, J-PAL and Pratham hosted the fourth in a series of webinars about Pratham’s teaching at the right level (TaRL) approach. This session focused on Teacher Training. Presenters shared research on the effectiveness of different training programs and discussed Pratham’s approach to teacher training. Radhika Bhula (Senior Policy Associate, J-PAL) shared evidence on the effectiveness of teacher training programs. Usha Rane (Director of Content and Training, Pratham) and Meera Tendolkar(Head of Math Content, Pratham) discussed Pratham’s practice-oriented approach to training teachers to implement TaRL.

Session 5: Adapting the TaRL Approach to Different Contexts

On 11 December 2018, J-PAL and Pratham hosted the fifth in a series of webinars about Pratham’s Teaching at the Right Level approach. This session focused on adapting the approach to different contexts. Emily Cupito (Associate Director of Policy, J-PAL Africa) presented on applying the generalizability framework using the adoption of TaRL in Zambia as an example. Usha Rane (Director of Content and Training, Pratham) shared her experience adapting teaching and learning materials and activities across India and Africa. Moitshepi Matsheng (Co-founder and Country Coordinator, Young 1ove) and Noam Angrist (Co-founder and Executive Director, Young 1ove) discussed how TaRL is being adapted for the Botswana context.

Session 6: Maintaining Quality at Scale

On 27 February 2019, Pratham and J-PAL hosted the sixth in a series of webinars about Pratham’s Teaching at the Right Level approach. This session focused on maintaining quality at scale. Rukmini Banerji (CEO, Pratham) discussed Pratham’s journey to scale. Ben Simuyandi (Policy Manager, J-PAL Africa/IPA Zambia) presented on the process of scaling the Catch Up programme from 80 to 1100 schools in Zambia. Ben Piper (Senior Director, RTI International) shared RTI’s experience of scaling up education programmes across Africa.

TaRL Africa Webinar: Engaging Parents and Communities

On 29 June, at 1pm CAT, TaRL Africa hosted the second webinar for the year, focusing on engaging parents and communities.

During this time, when many children around the world are not able to go to school, organisations and schools across the world are trying to find ways to keep children learning. The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the importance of engaging parents and communities in children’s education.

The webinar featured three speakers:

Kunieda Nobuhiro will share experiences from working with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on community engagement programmes across Africa
Samantha Friedlander from J-PAL Global will share some of the rigorous evidence behind parental engagement
Smitin Brid from Pratham will present on his work on Pratham’s Early Childhood Development programmes in India

What have we learned from randomized evaluations that policymakers, practitioners, and funders can use to improve social programs? J-PAL’s Policy Insights, organized by sector, highlight lessons emerging across multiple studies and the mechanisms that help explain the results. J-PAL’s upcoming policy insight titled “Providing Information to Students and Parents to Improve Learning Outcomes” draws on lessons from 23 randomized evaluations to demonstrate that giving parents and students information about their educational performance or options often increases parental engagement, student effort, or both, leading to improved learning outcomes. Providing information is also typically a low-cost intervention. Please check back in late July, when the insight will be posted here.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant the sudden closure of schools across the world. As schools slowly begin to reopen, it is important to re-engage children at school differently to the normal – in an environment where children are given time to catch up and learning can continue. Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) is an evidence-based intervention proven to quickly equip children in grades 3-5 with basic reading and arithmetic skills.
